Wee Waa is an island

So we ended up getting the storm last night - and it then rained most of the night. Mum & Dad got out ok, though they had to drive through a bit of water to get to Narrabri. Don't think they'll be coming back on Monday like they planned!

I spent the morning trying to find out relevent information about the floods for the kids & teachers at school, then spent the afternoon helping with pumping out one of the low lying streets in town. The morning was so frustrating, I was glad to be outside wading around in knee deep water.

Once again there was no single source of finding out the relevent information. The 'Public Enquiry' Number I wrote in my blog the other day wasn't really worth ringing. The only road closures they had access to was the RTA road closures - which only showed that the Kamillaroi Highway is closed (it's been closed for a while!). I ended up suggesting http://www.narrabriweather.net/ as a good site for road closures. The only place they could suggest to ring was the council - we were trying to find out when a road a was going to close - we could find out the roads that were closed easily.

I could go on & on about the rest of my morning toing & froing to trying and find out WHEN roads would be closed. Once again the problem is finding out at what point will the road close?? I know it can be difficult to determine with lots of factors influencing it - water can come up so quickly when it's still raining. It all ended up ok, kids & teachers all got sent home in time to get out before roads closed or got too high for vehicles to get through.

Finally got to go & get coffee -- only to get a phone call from P asking me to go & help them man the RFS  truck that had been brought in from Narrabri. So I got to wade around in knee deep water all afternoon. There are pumps on the levee bank all around town. The street where we were gets alot of water in it - and of course it had to be that pump that broke down. I just helped clear the strainer on the inlet hoses & wandered around mostly then helped pack up. The worst part was the bitey insects (mostly green ants I think) that decided we were their way out of the water! Once they finally worked out how to get the pump working enough to start pumping water, we packed up & left. Our pumps weren't big enough to get rid of all the water, but they did drop the level a bit & definitely stopped it getting any higher.

Looking towards the levee bank - the broken down pump is just out of the left of the photo.  I took a few photos of this block to show the people building here where the water goes!! (yes we know who owns it!)

The photos are all of the same side of the street - there is more of the street - there the water was starting to head under the houses.

Now we get to wait to see what happens as all the water from Tamworth etc heads down here.
