Australia Day 2010

We have had a relatively quiet day. I've had a headache so haven't wanted to do much. We did go to our local Museum for the Australia Day ceremony. It wasn't much - a few speeches, a few awards presented & some Aussie poetry. The kids were really good - only getting fidgety right at the end. The Australia Day Ambassador was Noel Cleal - a football player from the 70's - 80's. I thought there would be more people than there was seeing as Rugby League is popular in town. And especially as Noel Cleal is involved with the Manly Sea Eagles where a famous player from our town plays. Maybe it was the heat or who knows?

After the formal part the kids went & got their sample bags - SJ was very excited to get a flag - and then promptly broke it. We had sausage sizzle for lunch, then had a look through the museum. We've been a number of times so it's pretty familiar to the kids. M always has to go & check on 'Poppy's truck'. P's dad had an old Dodge truck with a crane on the back. The Historicial Society asked to borrow it, so P said they could keep it down there as it would get used more. They have machinery & displays - there's a farrier & saddler shop set up. P thinks one of the old cotton pickers there is one he used to drive.

The kids got cranky so we had a quick look through the cottage & the tiny schoolhouse which is new. Went home via the supermarket to get a cold drink & some supplies. I crashed in the recliner while the kids watched a DVD then played the Wii. SJ fell asleep too. It took me a while to wake up properly - my headache had slightly eased.

For dessert I made Choc Malt Brownies. This has become a bit of a family tradition for Australia Day. A few years ago my sister & I decided to make something nice on Australia Day - we were in Narooma in the caravan. Mum had decorated the caravan with Aussie stuff so originally we were going to go with lamingtons or something like that. Eventually we decided to make these brownies (which we had made before). Since then we've ended up making in each Australia Day wherever we are. It's very yummy - very bad for you too with the amount of butter & chocolate in it!
